How to clean cloth pads
Your reusable JuJu Cloth Pads require washing after each use, and may require stain removal treatment from time to time. Here are some tips for caring for your cloth pads so that they last you many years.
Before your period
Pre-wash your pad by hand or machine before using for the first time.Â
During your period
Pre-rinse your pad in cold water until the water runs clear or leave it to soak overnight
You can machine or hand wash your pad
Hand wash: Hand wash with detergent in warm water
Machine wash: Add to your next machine wash on a gentle, warm wash cycle Line dry, in the sun if possibleDo not fabric softeners Softeners coat the cotton fibers and reduce the absorbency of the pad Don not bleach Do not tumble dry Do not iron |
After your period
Some staining is normal due to the absorbent nature of the natural cotton fibres and should not be cause for concern. For heavy or stubborn stains, try rubbing bicarb soda with a little water on the stains and rinsing thoroughly afterwards.
You can also treat your pads every couple of months or more frequently if you suffer from yeast infections. To do this, wash your pad with a small amount of any of the following; white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, water-soluble tee tree oil or eucalyptus oil.
Thoroughly rinse your pad and line dry, in the sun if possible.
Storing your cloth pads
Once your pads are completely dry, you should fold them and store them in a clean, dry place.  To keep your cloth pad collection neat, tidy and protected, we recommend storing in one of our wet bags.
Cloth Pad FAQs
Why should I choose reusable cloth pads instead of disposables?
Reusable cloth pads are an eco-friendly alternative to disposable menstrual pads that can be washed and reused for many years. Not only does this help you eliminate excess waste going to landfill and polluting our waterways, it helps you save money too! JuJu cloth pads and reusable panty liners are made from soft, unbleached cotton and free from fragrances, formaldehyde, dioxins or absorption agents that are in many disposable pads – meaning they’re hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin.Â
How do you clean cloth pads?
After wearing a JuJu cloth pad or liner, rinse it in cold water or leave it to soak overnight. Then, hand wash with gentle detergent and warm water, or put in the washing machine on a warm wash cycle. For more detailed instructions, see our Cleaning & Care page.
What about removing stains from cloth pads?
Cotton is an absorbent fabric, which means it can be prone to staining – and staining is completely normal over time. You can treat stains with a natural stain remover product, or by rubbing a paste of bi-carb soda and water into the stain before washing. We also recommend hanging your pads out in full sun to dry in order to reduce the appearance of stains.Â
What are JuJu cloth pads made of?
All of our pads have layers of absorbent, breathable cotton fabric on the inside, with a breathable waterproof PUL (polyurethane laminate) inner lining on the back layer that sits against your undies. We have two different moisture-wicking topper fabric to choose from, which sit against your skin – pure cotton, or organic cotton, which meets the Organic Content Standard (OCS) and complies with Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). We use plastic snaps on all our pads instead of metal, to minimise the chance of reactions from those with sensitivities to metal.Â
Will JuJu cloth pads leak?
When used correctly, JuJu cloth pads shouldn’t leak. All of our cloth pads have a waterproof PUL (polyurethane laminate) inner lining on the back layer that sits in your underwear to prevent fluid from seeping through.Â
How often do JuJu cloth pads need to be changed?
We recommend changing your JuJu pad at least every 3-4 hours to avoid any smells developing, which is standard with both reusable and disposable pads of any type.Â
How long will my JuJu cloth pads last?
When cared for and stored properly, your JuJu cloth pads can be reused dozens of times and last many years! Refer to our Cleaning & Care page for detailed instructions on how to care for your pads properly.
Which size pads do I need?
JuJu cloth pads are available in five different sizes: panty liner (suitable for discharge or spotting), mini (suitable for a light flow), regular (suitable for a moderate flow), large (suitable for a moderate to heavy flow) and night (suitable for a heavy flow or overnight protection). Our Sample Pad Packs contain one of each size if you wish to try them before building your collection, or start with one of our Flow Pad Packs for our recommended selection of pads for a light, moderate or heavy flow.
Can you use JuJu cloth pads for postpartum bleeding?
Yes – our night pads are excellent for postpartum bleeding, and many new mums like to wear the smaller sizes for ongoing lighter discharge in the weeks following birth. JuJu cloth pads may not be suitable for very heavy postpartum bleeding, unless you plan on changing very frequently.Â
Can you use JuJu cloth pads for heavy periods?
Yes – select the night or large sizes for a heavier flow, or start with our heavy Flow Pad Pack.
Are JuJu cloth pads plastic free?
Not entirely. To prevent leaks, we have included a polyurethane laminate layer in all of our pads and liners, and have chosen to use plastic snaps to cater to those who have metal allergies. All other layers of our pads are 100% cotton, and all of our pad packaging is 100% plastic free and recyclable cardboard.
How do I store my JuJu cloth pads?
It’s important to store your pads in a clean, dry place in between cycles, and allow them to fully dry before storing them. Storing them while still damp can lead them to develop mold. We recommend storing your cloth pads in a JuJu storage bag, which has a waterproof lining to protect your pads from moisture and dirt.Â
Do cloth pads smell?
Just like disposable pads, cloth pads can start to smell if worn for an extended period of time. This is because once menstrual blood is exposed to air, it begins to oxidise and form an odour. We do not use any fragrances in our pads to mask odours, so we recommend changing your pad every 3-4 hours to prevent any smells. Some people find they can wear them for longer before needing to change. The same goes for if you’re using JuJu cloth pads for light bladder leakage (LBL) or light urinary incontinence – our pads do not contain fragrances to mask the odour of urine. Â
How do JuJu cloth pads attach to my underwear?Â
Unlike disposable pads that stick to your underwear with adhesive, JuJu pads and panty liners are fastened with wings around the gusset of your underwear. We’ve designed our pads with dual snaps, allowing you to adjust the width of the pad according to the size of the gusset in your underwear, for a comfortable and secure fit.
Will JuJu cloth pads bunch up in my underwear?
No –Â the absorbent layers in our cloth pads are sewn and secured down the centre only, so they sit comfortably and close to the body without bunching up.
Are JuJu cloth pads bulky?
No – our cloth pads are designed to be slimline and similar in thickness to disposable ultra-thin pads, for ultimate comfort. They vary in thickness slightly depending on the size, as the larger size pads have more absorbent layers.
Where are JuJu cloth pads made?
JuJu cloth pads and pantyliners are lovingly handmade in Korea.Â
